New developments shaping the skyline in Sandton’s ongoing growth

Sandton has long been recognised as South Africa’s premier business district, and recent developments show that the precinct is continuing to evolve. From new infrastructure projects that improve connectivity to large-scale developments that shape how people live and work in the area, investment in Sandton remains strong despite wider economic challenges and the various challenges that Joburg is facing.

Developments reinforcing Sandton’s status as South Africa’s powerhouse include the Sandton Drive Link Bridge, the newly opened Emeris Sandton Mega Campus and The Olympus. 3Cube Property Solutions has the lowdown on these developments and what they mean for Sandton’s future.

Sandton Drive Link Bridge enhances safety, convenience and aesthetics

Last month, Engineering News reported that the 106-metre Sandton Drive Link Bridge, developed by Growthpoint to improve safety, accessibility and walkability within Sandton Central, has been completed. Built at a cost of around R26 million, the structure provides a direct pedestrian route over Sandton Drive, linking The Place office building at 1 Sandton Drive with the Sandton City shopping complex. The project, which has been in the pipeline for nearly 18 years, was delivered in partnership with Sandton City, the Sandton Central Management District and the City of Johannesburg.

Designed with both functionality and aesthetics in mind, the bridge features stainless steel balustrades, a glass-covered viewing deck and integrated lighting. In short, the bridge makes a significant contribution to Sandton’s skyline. The bridge is open to the public during the day, with controlled access at night. Over and above connecting the precinct’s commercial, retail, residential and public spaces, the bridge also provides convenient access for those accessing the services of the US Consulate.

New higher education hub opens its doors in Sandton

Another significant addition to Sandton’s built environment is the Emeris Sandton Mega Campus, developed by education group ADvTECH. Officially opened in February 2026, the R420-million, 47 000m² campus represents one of the largest private investments in tertiary education in Gauteng. The development consolidates The Independent Institute of Education’s Varsity College Sandton and IIE Vega School Bordeaux on a single site, creating a major higher-education hub within Joburg’s premier business district.

As one would expect, the hub has been developed to support both academic achievement and student wellbeing. It boasts a range of modern facilities, including IT laboratories, interactive classrooms, a VR studio, podcast and green-screen studios and collaborative learning spaces. An indoor sports centre and other student-focused amenities enhance the campus environment.

The first phase of the development is designed to accommodate around 9 000 students, with future expansion expected to increase capacity to more than 13 000.

Landmark luxury residential development taking shape

Ground has been broken on Olympus Sandton, a development being delivered through a joint venture between Tricolt Group and Growthpoint Properties. The R1.2 billion project forms part of the Sandton Summit mixed-use precinct, and its twin towers are intended to serve as a prominent gateway into Sandton.

The development will comprise 529 apartments, and has already seen exceptionally strong demand, with at least 420 units already being sold. It secured more than R1.2 billion in sales within eight months of launch, making it one of Sandton’s fastest-selling residential developments.

The towers feature a distinctive twisting geometry, intended to maximise views and create a striking addition to Sandton’s skyline. The towers are being constructed simultaneously and completion is anticipated in early 2028.

These developments highlight how Sandton is continuing to evolve as South Africa’s leading business and lifestyle district. From new infrastructure projects to educational and residential opportunities, the broader shift towards a more integrated mixed-use urban environment is clear.
